Many connectors find that, over time, they have less to do to keep their networks running smoothly. If another network member has (either formally or informally) taken on a connector role, then they may be doing a great job of keeping the conversations flowing. If, on the other hand, you notice that your network isn’t being used as much as it used to be, it is your role as the connector to find ways of re-engaging with everyone so that the network remains effective. Some tips for maintaining an effective network over time are:
• Use the network regularly yourself. It is better to add short postings and updates on a regular basis, than to post large stories only occasionally.
• Add tasks and events, when you know there is is an event coming up, or something your network center could use help with. Encourage dialogue between members, and post short updates when you see your network center so that everyone can stay up-to-date on what is happening in his or her life.
• Take pictures at an outing or event involving the person at the centre of the network. Be sure and let members know you have posted pictures and ask members to let you know what they think of the photos. They will need to log in to see the photos making it especially easy for them to respond.
• We recommend hosting a network party about a month after launch. Plan something that will be fun for everyone, and that will celebrate the network and the network center, while also giving everyone an opportunity to talk about how they are using the network, what they find valuable, and what suggestions they have for how it could be more effective. As a tip take some pictures and post them on the site with a story.
• As the connector please keep track of any issues or concerns raised by your network members. If there are issues you cannot address yourself, check in your Community of Practice (CoP) to see if any other connectors from your organization have encountered the same challenge. You can also use the CoP site to ask a Tyze staff member about the issue you’re facing.
• Keep coming back to the purpose of the network you’ve created. If you encounter stumbling blocks it is often helpful to take a step back and remind your network members about why you have all come together to support your network center, and how valuable their contributions are. Remember, you are all working together to ensure a good life for someone you care about and your Tyze network can play a key role in doing just that.
