Use of online social networks shows a positive impact on local communities and close friends and family. A report published by Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project discusses "the role of the internet and mobile phone in people’s core social networks" related to social isolation.

In a new research report, title "How the Internet and Mobile Phones Impact American's Social Networks", the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project has published findings that characterize online and in person social discussion groups. Their statistics make the differentiation between relationships that are geographically dispersed with weak social ties and core relationships based on kinship with geographic proximity as they relate to the perception of how much interaction, trust, and participation is shared amongst any one person's network.

Of particular interest are the findings about online social applications both computer based and on mobile devices and how they affect participation in ones local community. Additionally patterns of social isolation and the positive impact of online communication are discussed with statistics related to participation in civic spaces.
